SUMMARY:Data Bites - Introduction to Manual Data De-identification
DESCRIPTION:This practical workshop\, delivered by the UBC Library Research Data Management team\, is the second session in a four‑part series on de-identifying and preparing sensitive data for responsible research use and sharing. Building on the concepts introduced in the first session\, this hands‑on workshop focuses on applied manual techniques for de-identifying datasets containing sensitive information. \n\n\n\nParticipants will learn how to: \n\n\n\n\nApply core manual de-identification methods\, including anonymization\, pseudonymization\, aggregation\, masking\, generalization\, and local suppression\, to protect participant privacy.\n\n\n\nWork through a step-by-step de-identification workflow\, addressing direct identifiers\, dates\, geographic data\, and variables linkable to external sources.\n\n\n\nSelect the most appropriate de-identification method for each variable type based on sensitivity and analytical need.\n\n\n\nAssess the anonymity of a finalized dataset using measures such as k-anonymity to evaluate whether it is sufficiently de-identified for sharing.\n\n\n\n\nNote: This workshop provides a foundational introduction to manual data de-identification. Participants are encouraged to consult their institutional privacy\, legal\, or compliance experts for guidance on specific datasets.

SUMMARY:QGIS Intensive Series: Mapping for Academic Publication (Reference Maps)
DESCRIPTION:In this beginner-friendly workshop\, you will learn to create simple\, static maps to accompany academic publications. You will be introduced to a variety of maps as well as best practices in cartography. This workshop is suited for anyone who wants to make a map of their research area\, or whose project involves data with a spatial component. To make our maps\, we will use QGIS\, a free and open-source Geographic Information System (GIS) for analyzing\, modifying\, and visualizing spatial data. \n\n\n\nBy the end of this workshop\, you will have the confidence to: \n\n\n\n\nDecide what kind of map best conveys your research or contextualizes your study area;\n\n\n\nFind and download relevant spatial data;\n\n\n\nLoad datasets into QGIS and style them as data layers;\n\n\n\nCompose a map that includes a title\, scale bar\, legend\, and north arrow; and\n\n\n\nExport this map into formats compatible with print and digital publication.\n\n\n\n\nNOTE: The fundamental skills and concepts pertaining to spatial data\, map types\, and the QGIS interface will not be covered during this workshop.
