DESCRIPTION:Workshop: Programmatic Data De-identification with R \n\n\n\nThis practical workshop\, delivered by the UBC Library Research Data Management team\, introduces programmatic approaches to de-identifying sensitive research data in R. Through hands-on exercises using a realistic survey dataset\, participants will apply a structured workflow\, from assessing privacy risks to exporting a shareable\, de-identified dataset. \n\n\n\nParticipants will learn how to: \n\n\n\n\nIdentify privacy risks in research data\, including direct identifiers\, dates\, geographic variables\, and free-text fields.\n\n\n\nApply de-identification methods in R using dplyr\, including removal\, generalization\, suppression\, anonymization\, and pseudonymization.\n\n\n\nRun quality assurance checks to confirm a dataset is sufficiently de-identified before sharing.\n\n\n\nExport a de-identified dataset and a data key file\, and understand best practices for securely storing each.\n\n\n\n\n— \n\n\n\nNote 1: Participants familiar with R and RStudio are welcome to follow along on their own workstations. SUMMARY:Powerful searching with Regular Expressions
DESCRIPTION:Regular expressions are a powerful and standardized way of representing patterns in text using special symbols and syntax. A core part of many programming languages\, search engines\, text editors\, and other commonly-used software\, regular expressions have a surprisingly wide array of uses\, from efficiently finding strings of text in large data sets\, to easily formatting complex documents\, to quickly replacing many small everyday tasks that might otherwise require writing shell scripts or other programs. \n\n\n\nThis hands-on workshop introduces regular expressions (regex) from the ground up. SUMMARY:QGIS Intensive Series: Mapping for Academic Publication (Reference Maps)
DESCRIPTION:In this beginner-friendly workshop\, you will learn to create simple\, static maps to accompany academic publications. You will be introduced to a variety of maps as well as best practices in cartography. This workshop is suited for anyone who wants to make a map of their research area\, or whose project involves data with a spatial component. To make our maps\, we will use QGIS\, a free and open-source Geographic Information System (GIS) for analyzing\, modifying\, and visualizing spatial data. \n\n\n\nBy the end of this workshop\, you will have the confidence to: \n\n\n\n\nDecide what kind of map best conveys your research or contextualizes your study area;\n\n\n\nFind and download relevant spatial data;\n\n\n\nLoad datasets into QGIS and style them as data layers;\n\n\n\nCompose a map that includes a title\, scale bar\, legend\, and north arrow; and\n\n\n\nExport this map into formats compatible with print and digital publication.\n\n\n\n\nNOTE: The fundamental skills and concepts pertaining to spatial data\, map types\, and the QGIS interface will not be covered during this workshop. DESCRIPTION:Plain text formats have received increasing attention from scholars in recent years and have been described as among the best ways to store knowledge persistently. This workshop will introduce you to the benefits of using plain text files and simple markup formats to create flexible\, robust\, and future-proof workflows for digital scholarship\, research\, and knowledge. We will begin with a brief introduction to the Markdown text format and create a short sample document which with the use of a few simple tools that can be converted into a website\, dynamic slideshow presentation\, PDF\, and even a formatted PhD thesis.
