SUMMARY:Responsible AI in Digital Humanities Projects
DESCRIPTION:Is it possible to use AI in Digital Humanities (DH) research responsibly\, given the many harms it perpetuates? The Responsible AI for Digital Humanities Projects workshop combines critical questioning with hands-on practice to explore whether and potentially how AI should be used for DH research. We will discuss justice-oriented AI initiatives\, resources to help reimagine / reclaim / refuse AI\, and a survey of ways digital humanists are working with AI. Throughout the workshop\, running open source models on your own machine rather than relying on frontier models and other sustainable practices such as scaling (down) to the needs of your project will be emphasized. SUMMARY:Field Recording: Capturing Audio for Podcasting\, Qualitative Research\, Environmental Science\, Art\, Music\, and More!
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to get outside for your interviews and focus groups\, ecological study\, or creative practice? While some interviews are best held indoors in a studio like those at Lyons New Media Centre\, there are a million reason to leave the recording studio behind. This can include capturing natural or ambient sounds\, making a podcast richer with audio from daily life\, or going to an interview subject’s home turf so they feel a bit more comfortable. This 3-hour intensive will give you hands-on experience with field recording for a range of purposes. \n\n\n\nA trifecta of experts will boost your technical and creative decision-making: \n\n\n\n\nSam Hansen brings experience field recording for their podcast productions\, working with the BBC\, NPR\, CBC on tape syncs\, and setting up mics outside the studio.\n\n\n\nLyons’ own Carlie King will introduce you to their field recording equipment kits (with H6 and H4 zoom recorders) and share details on microphone recording patterns.\n\n\n\nDanica Evering will give practical overview of approaches to recording with future editing and artistic choices in mind.\n\n\n\n\nThis session is designed for absolute beginners who have no experience with field recording but we also welcome audio enthusiasts who want to find community. We will intentionally keep this very interdisciplinary to reach anyone looking to record audio: from Health Sciences researchers recording interviews in busy clinical settings to ecologists and biologists looking to study bioacoustics of bird song to iArts (Integrated Arts) undergrads working on a multimedia project. SUMMARY:Data Management Plan Bootcamp (In-Person)
DESCRIPTION:Let us be your body double with this in-person bootcamp! Data Management Plans (DMPs) are both incredibly helpful research tools and increasingly required for grants but it can hard to know how to complete a Data Management Plan if it’s your first time. This session is carefully timed for researchers completing a CFI or Tri-Agency grant this fall. If you’re in the process of creating a DMP\, either for a grant application or for your own research\, join RDM Services for this afternoon session. The RDM services team will provide tailored guidance as you write your plan on site\, and we’ll have some light snacks and refreshments to keep you going. Come away with a clear path forward or even a finished DMP! \n\n\n\nThis participatory session is especially relevant for researchers at all levels in the beginning stages of a research project or streamlining best practices for their research team. Come on your own\, send your research staff\, or bring your whole research group. SUMMARY:Qualitative Data Bootcamp: Clean Collection\, De-identification\, and Analysis Basics
DESCRIPTION:Want some focused skill development time for your qualitative practice? Get ready to take care of and analyze qualitative research data: interview transcripts\, surveys oral histories\, focus groups\, field notes\, artistic expression\, photovoice and more. Qualitative methods let us understand lived experiences and motivations\, see a research question from different standpoints\, and highlight contexts. \n\n\n\nThis bootcamp is for those trying to get a qualitative research project off the ground who would like support on different aspects across the research lifecycle. Starting with Data Management Planning\, we will discuss data management during collection\, qualitative data analysis fundamentals such as conducting the analysis\, and end with effective ways of sharing data and communicating results. These tangible actions will work alongside more advanced questions about ethics and uncertainty. \n\n\n\nWe’ll practice hands-on with de-identification and open-source tools such as QualCoder for qualitative data analysis and introduce some techniques that can be used. Participants are not expected to have any prior knowledge of these tools when coming into the workshop. There will be both case studies as well as opportunities to work on your project and receive feedback in the moment. \n\n\n\nThis session is great for qualitative researchers across all faculties\, especially those working in Health Sciences\, Social Sciences\, and the Humanities.
