SUMMARY:3D Visualization
DESCRIPTION:Date: 16 February 2024 \n\n\n\n3D visualization has been used in traditional scientific computing for several decades to visualize the results of multidimensional numerical simulations. In humanities\, 3D visualizations have been mostly restricted to specialized areas such as game engines\, architectural renderings\, virtual environments\, photogrammetric processing\, and visualization of point cloud data. In this short course\, we will use the 3D space to visualize differences in vocabularies in a given set of texts as 3D scatter plots and 3D graphs — think of this as an extension of traditional 2D plotting to the third dimension\, where now you can suddenly visualize much bigger datasets. This lecture-style course will have many live demos you can try running on your computer after the course. \n\n\n\nLed by: Alex Razoumov \n\n\n\nThis event is part of the Digital Research Alliance of Canada’s HSS (Humanities and Social Sciences) Series 2024.  For more information\, visit: https://hss24.netlify.app/.

SUMMARY:Introduction to deep learning\, NLP\, and LLMs / Introduction à l’apprentissage profond et au traitement du langage
DESCRIPTION:How does deep learning really work? What exactly are those large language models everybody talks about? How can I build a neural network? What is NLP? \n\n\n\nThis presentation will answer these questions in a non-technical manner to give you a high-level understanding of a discipline that has become crucial in all fields of research. \n\n\n\nThe goals are to: \n\n\n\n\nclarify concepts\,\n\n\n\npresent a range of tools available\,\n\n\n\ngive an overview of the field\, and\n\n\n\npoint out resources to get you started using DL\, LLMs\, or NLP for your research.\n\n\n\n\nComment fonctionne l’apprentissage profond? \n\n\n\nLed by / Presenté par: Marie H. Burle (EN); Lucas Nogueira (FR) \n\n\n\nThis event is part of the Digital Research Alliance of Canada’s HSS (Humanities and Social Sciences) Series 2024.  For more information\, visit: https://hss24.netlify.app/. \n\n\n\nCet événement fait partie de l’École hivernale des SHS 2024 (Alliance de recherche numérique du Canada).  Pour plus d’informations\, visitez: https://hss24.netlify.app/.

SUMMARY:3D Visualization With XR Technology
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wished you could stand in and study an imaginary or long-vanished space–from a work of literature or from a distant period in history\, or perhaps a virtual creation of a famous thought experiment or a speculative model of something that doesn’t exist in the real world? 3D visualization can grant that wish. \n\n\n\nThis in-person workshop will provide an overview of 3D visualization using specific XR (Extended Reality) technologies\, in addition to development tips in the Unity Game Engine. Participants will get hands-on demos with various XR technologies including the Looking Glass Volumetric Display\, Quest 2\, and various AR applications. In addition\, participants will also get the opportunity to view 3D simulations in the TMU Library Immersion Studio\, which is a 360 degree projection cylinder for shared VR experiences. Development tips will also be provided for each showcased technology. This workshop is aimed to help participants gain more exposure with XR technology and 3D visualization for education and research\, and does not require any prior 3D development knowledge to attend the workshop. \n\n\n\nFeb 16\, 1pm – 2:30pm Eastern \n\n\n\nInstructor: Michael Carter-Alt\, Immersive Technology Specialist at TMU Libraries’ Immersion Studio
