SUMMARY:DORA: Visualizing Research Impact
DESCRIPTION:The ability to create effective visualizations of your research impact is a valuable skill when competing for grants\, awards\, and attention in a crowded research landscape. This hands-on workshop introduces participants to a range of tools and techniques for creating clear\, compelling graphics that communicate research impact from multiple perspectives\, including citation metrics\, collaboration networks\, research outputs\, and media attention. Participants will explore both ready-made visualizations and customizable approaches for presenting impact data to diverse audiences. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is part of the DORA (San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment) Workshop Series\, which explores practical approaches for showcasing and evaluating research beyond traditional metrics. Together\, these sessions focus on strengthening researcher visibility\, communicating research impact\, and recognizing the value of diverse scholarly contributions. \n\n\n\nThis session is ideal for researchers\, administrators\, and graduate students interested in research metrics\, scholarly communication\, and mapping academic influence. No previous experience with data visualization is necessary. \n\n\n\nBy the end of this session\, participants will be able to: \n\n\n\n\nGenerate ready-made impact visualizations using a variety of bibliometric and research impact tools available at McMaster.\n\n\n\nUse raw bibliometric data and customizable templates to create effective research impact visualizations.\n\n\n\nSelect appropriate visualization types for different kinds of impact data and audiences.\n\n\n\nIncorporate research impact visualizations into grant applications\, award nominations\, annual reports\, and other research communication activities.\n\n\n\n\nDetails: Any preparatory work for the session can be found on its information page. This virtual workshop will be recorded and shared on the same page\, and discoverable via the Sherman Centre’s Online Learning Catalogue. \n\n\n\nInstructors: Jack Young and Subhanya Sivajothy

SUMMARY:Powerful searching with Regular Expressions
DESCRIPTION:November 10th 2026 \n\n\n\nRegular expressions are a powerful and standardized way of representing patterns in text using special symbols and syntax. A core part of many programming languages\, search engines\, text editors\, and other commonly-used software\, regular expressions have a surprisingly wide array of uses\, from efficiently finding strings of text in large data sets\, to easily formatting complex documents\, to quickly replacing many small everyday tasks that might otherwise require writing shell scripts or other programs. \n\n\n\nThis hands-on workshop introduces regular expressions (regex) from the ground up. After this workshop\, attendees will understand basic regular expression syntax; they will be able to apply regex syntax in common applications; they will understand when it might be appropriate to use regex; and they will be able to analyze their own workflows and adapt regex solutions to support them. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is part of the Core Skills series.  \n\n\n\nPresenter(s):Kamal Abou Mikhael
