SUMMARY:Testing AI for Social Science and Humanities Research Using Chainforge
DESCRIPTION:Date: December 3\, 2026 at 9am PT | 10am ABT | 11am ET | 1pm AT\n\n\n\nDuration: 2 hours\n\n\n\nLanguage of instruction: English\n\n\n\n\nIf you want to use Large Language Models for research you will want to test different combinations of evidence\, prompts\, and models. Chainforge is a free in-browser visual programming environment that lets you lay out flows that try variations of evidence\, prompts\, and models. In this workshop we will show you how to use Chainforge to create flows that fit your research needs. We will also survey some common models for flows in the Social Science and Humanities. \n\n\n\nRegister here! \n\n\n\nInstructor: Dr. Geoffrey Martin Rockwell is a Professor of Philosophy and Digital Humanities at the University of Alberta. He holds a Canada CIFAR AI Chair and is a Fellow at the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute. He has a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Toronto and has published on subjects such as artificial intelligence and ethics\, philosophical dialogue\, textual visualization and analysis\, digital humanities\, instructional technology\, computer games and multimedia. His books include Defining Dialogue: From Socrates to the Internet (Humanity Books\, 2003) and Hermeneutica\, co-authored with Stéfan Sinclair (MIT Press\, 2016). Hermeneutica is part of a hybrid text and tool project with Voyant Tools (voyant-tools.org)\, an award-winning suite of analytical tools. He recently co-edited Right Research: Modelling Sustainable Research Practices in the Anthropocene (Open Book Publishers\, 2021) and On Making in the Digital Humanities (UCL Press\, 2023).

DESCRIPTION:Reproducible research means setting things up so that after a late-night moonlight and caffeine powered deep work breakthrough you can wake up the next morning and know what you did and explain it to your supervisor. It also means that research results can be verified independently\, and researchers can more easily share and use methods and tools developed by other researchers. \n\n\n\nThis session will explore what reproducibility and replicability are\, why they matter\, and what it means to call your research reproducible. Il facilite l’organisation et l’analyse de données non structurées.   \n\n\n\nCette initiation présentera les fonctionnalités de base du logiciel :   \n\n\n\n\nDémarrage d’un projet et interface \n\n\n\nImportation de sources textuelles \n\n\n\nEncodage du contenu \n\n\n\nFonctionnalités d’annotation\n\n\n\nQuelques fonctions d’exploration\n\n\n\n\nLes informations de connexion (lien Zoom) seront envoyées par courriel à votre adresse UQAM.  \n\n\n\nInformations importantes :  \n\n\n\n\nVeuillez télécharger et installer NVivo avant la formation. Notez qu’il ne sera pas possible d’offrir de l’aide à l’installation du logiciel durant le webinaire. Testez la création d’un nouveau projet en suivant la procédure dans le document joint (NVivo_Creer_projet\, plus bas sur cette page) pour vous assurer que tout est fonctionnel. SUMMARY:Introduction to SQL
DESCRIPTION:Learn the fundamentals of Structured Query Language (SQL) through a hands-on introduction using SQLite Online\, a free\, browser-based environment that requires no software installation. This beginner-friendly workshop will introduce participants to the basic concepts of relational databases and provide practical experience writing and running SQL queries. \n\n\n\nParticipants will learn how to retrieve\, filter\, sort\, and summarize data using SQL and will work through examples using a sample database. The workshop will also introduce concepts such as tables\, fields\, records\, primary keys\, and relationships between tables. By the end of the session\, participants will have a foundation for using SQL to explore and analyze structured research data. \n\n\n\nBy the end of the workshop\, participants will be able to: \n\n\n\n\nExplain basic relational database concepts\, including tables\, records\, fields\, and keys.\n\n\n\nNavigate and use SQLite Online to create and run SQL queries.\n\n\n\nWrite basic SQL queries using SELECT and FROM.\n\n\n\nFilter and sort data using WHERE and ORDER BY.\n\n\n\nUse SQL functions to summarize and aggregate data\, including COUNT\, SUM\, AVG\, MIN\, and MAX.\n\n\n\nGroup and summarize data using GROUP BY.\n\n\n\nCombine information from multiple tables using basic JOIN operations.\n\n\n\nApply SQL queries to explore and extract information from structured datasets.\n\n\n\n\nDetails: Any preparatory work for the session can be found on its information page. This virtual workshop will be recorded and shared on the same page\, and discoverable via the Sherman Centre’s Online Learning Catalogue. \n\n\n\nInstructors: John Fink and Vivek Jadon
