DESCRIPTION:Want to explore how people\, ideas\, or objects are connected? In this virtual workshop\, you will learn how to use Gephi\, a free and open-source tool designed for network visualization and analysis. We will focus on how graph data can help express relationships between entities\, perfect for exploring everything from social networks to historical connections. \n\n\n\nThis session is ideal for anyone curious about visualizing networks—no prior experience with Gephi or network analysis is required! It’s especially useful for humanities scholars interested in exploring relationships in texts\, people\, or historical data. \n\n\n\nBy the end of this session\, participants will be able to: \n\n\n\n\nImport a dataset into Gephi\n\n\n\nIdentify key network elements such as nodes and edges.\n\n\n\nApply basic layout algorithms (e.g.\, Force Atlas 2\, Fruchterman Reingold)\n\n\n\nUtilize visual ranking tools (e.g.\, node size by degree\, edge color by weight) to effectively explore and visualize network structures within Gephi.\n\n\n\n\nDetails: Any preparatory work for the session can be found on its information page. This virtual workshop will be recorded and shared on the same page\, and discoverable via the Sherman Centre’s Online Learning Catalogue. \n\n\n\nInstructor: Subhanya Sivajothy

In this session\, participants will learn the basics of coding in R\, and will become familiar with using RStudio. We will cover creating objects\, importing and working with data\, using the basic libraries\, and performing simple operations. This session is suitable for beginners with no prior knowledge of R. There are no prerequisite coding skills. \n\n\n\nWhile the examples and data used will be aimed at the Humanities and Social Sciences community\, the session is open to anyone and everyone interested in learning about R. SUMMARY:Data Deposit and Retention: Get Readier for Requirements from Funders and Publishers
DESCRIPTION:Are looming requirements for data retention\, deposit\, and availability getting you down? Or maybe a journal is asking you to deposit your research data and you don’t know where to start? Get readier for requirements with this quick\, timely webinar. \n\n\n\nData deposit and data sharing are increasingly recognized as best practices to support open research\, reproducibility\, research integrity\, collaboration\, and more. In January 2027\, the Tri-Agencies (CIHR\, NSERC\, and SSHRC) are targeted to implement a data deposit and retention requirement for funded projects. Many journals are also asking researchers to share or make data available: BMJ\, PLOS\, Nature\, NEJM\, and Frontiers. But what’s the best repository to share it in? How do you meet this requirement if you have sensitive or very large datasets? \n\n\n\nIf you’re a researcher\, on a research team\, a research support staff\, or a student with questions about impending requirements\, this session is for you. DESCRIPTION:Date: January 27\, 2027 at 9am PT | 10am ABT | 11am ET | 1pm AT\n\n\n\nDuration: 3 hours\n\n\n\nLanguage of instruction: English\n\n\n\n\nPython has been one of the most popular programming languages for the past 20 years. Today it is a key language for data analysis in a huge number of fields\, including many in the social sciences and humanities. \n\n\n\nThis introductory workshop will walk you through the basics of programming in Python. You will be introduced to the main language features of Python\, including: variables and data types\, conditionals\, lists\, for/while loops\, list comprehensions\, and dictionaries. You will also learn how to write your own functions\, and how to work with and plot tabular data. The workshop will give you lots of opportunities for hands-on practice; instead of covering these topics in a dry and abstract fashion\, we will play with datasets from the Museum of Modern Art and discuss concepts as we go. \n\n\n\nRegister here! \n\n\n\nInstructor: Marie-Hélène Burle is an evolutionary and behavioural biologist by training\, a Software/Data Carpentry instructor\, and an open source advocate.
