DESCRIPTION:Date: 14 February 2024 \n\n\n\nWe’ll be presenting the main features of Stylo\, a web-accessible semantic text editor for writing in the humanities and social sciences. Since the project’s launch in 2017\, one of its objectives has been to provide a tool capable of changing and improving the academic publishing chain\, particularly the workflow of journals in the humanities and social sciences. \n\n\n\nStylo is based on a principle known as single source publishing: from a single source Stylo can produce different objects in various formats such as HTML\, PDF\, XML. The implementation of this principle relies first and foremost on a WYSIWYM (What you see is what you mean) interface and the use of three formats to manipulate the source: Markdown for body text\, YAML to serialize metadata and BibTeX to structure bibliographic references. \n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, we’ll show how to create and write text in Stylo\, as well as the various functions for manipulating the elements that will form the source of our documents\, which we can then export in a variety of formats. \n\n\n\nLed by / Presenté par: Guilia Ferretti (EN); Roch Delannay (FR) \n\n\n\nThis event is part of the Digital Research Alliance of Canada’s HSS (Humanities and Social Sciences) Series 2024.  For more information\, visit: https://hss24.netlify.app/.

SUMMARY:The Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) | Le Text Encoding Initiative (TEI)
DESCRIPTION:Date: 14 February 2024 \n\n\n\nThis workshop will introduce the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI): the de facto standard in the humanities for creating digital texts. In this workshop\, we will discuss the scholarly and technical affordances are of using the TEI\, answering why it is that so many digital humanities resources—including Early English Books Online (EEBO)\, Eighteenth Century Collections Online\, and the Women Writers Project—use TEI to enrich their digital archives. We will also discuss the wide variety of tools and platforms built by the TEI community for creating\, sustaining\, and publishing TEI encoded texts. No prior experience with markup languages\, text encoding\, or the digital humanities necessary. \n\n\n\nLed by / Presenté par: Joey Takeda (EN); Yanet Hernández (FR) \n\n\n\nThis event is part of the Digital Research Alliance of Canada’s HSS (Humanities and Social Sciences) Series 2024.  For more information\, visit: https://hss24.netlify.app/.

SUMMARY:Web Scraping with Python's Beautiful Soup
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will introduce attendees to techniques for scraping information from the web using Python’s Beautiful Soup (bs4) toolkit. We will begin with a basic overview of the “anatomy” or structure of a webpage. Students will then learn how to write a script for extracting textual data from websites like Reddit and organizing it into spreadsheets. The second half of the workshop will explore how to use Python’s Pandas library to clean and analyze your data. In addition to technical skills\, students are encouraged to engage with critical questions like: What is web scraping for and what can we\, as researchers\, learn from publicly available data? What are the potential ethical and legal challenges of data harvesting\, and how do we do it responsibly?

DESCRIPTION:Date: 15 February 2024 \n\n\n\nUsing a single environment for all stages of your research project can help you organize your work. To this end\, our team recommends JupyterLab\, a software that logs code\, text\, equations\, graphs and visualizations in a single document. This tool can also execute the lines of a program one at a time and thus allow their respective effects to be accurately identified. This training will equip you to take advantage of JupyterLab’s graphical interface and its key features. \n\n\n\nLed by / Presenté par: Elie Haber (EN); Charles Coulombe (FR) \n\n\n\nThis event is part of the Digital Research Alliance of Canada’s HSS (Humanities and Social Sciences) Series 2024.  For more information\, visit: https://hss24.netlify.app/.

SUMMARY:3D Visualization
DESCRIPTION:Date: 16 February 2024 \n\n\n\n3D visualization has been used in traditional scientific computing for several decades to visualize the results of multidimensional numerical simulations. In humanities\, 3D visualizations have been mostly restricted to specialized areas such as game engines\, architectural renderings\, virtual environments\, photogrammetric processing\, and visualization of point cloud data. In this short course\, we will use the 3D space to visualize differences in vocabularies in a given set of texts as 3D scatter plots and 3D graphs — think of this as an extension of traditional 2D plotting to the third dimension\, where now you can suddenly visualize much bigger datasets. This lecture-style course will have many live demos you can try running on your computer after the course. \n\n\n\nLed by: Alex Razoumov \n\n\n\nThis event is part of the Digital Research Alliance of Canada’s HSS (Humanities and Social Sciences) Series 2024.  For more information\, visit: https://hss24.netlify.app/.

SUMMARY:3D Visualization With XR Technology
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wished you could stand in and study an imaginary or long-vanished space–from a work of literature or from a distant period in history\, or perhaps a virtual creation of a famous thought experiment or a speculative model of something that doesn’t exist in the real world? 3D visualization can grant that wish. \n\n\n\nThis in-person workshop will provide an overview of 3D visualization using specific XR (Extended Reality) technologies\, in addition to development tips in the Unity Game Engine. Participants will get hands-on demos with various XR technologies including the Looking Glass Volumetric Display\, Quest 2\, and various AR applications. In addition\, participants will also get the opportunity to view 3D simulations in the TMU Library Immersion Studio\, which is a 360 degree projection cylinder for shared VR experiences. SUMMARY:Safeguarding your research data
DESCRIPTION:Grant applications and ethics protocols suggest you need to ensure research data is kept secure\, but the “how” of managing this task is rarely addressed. We’ll guide you through common research issues connected with privacy and security: using online or “cloud” services for file storage\, ensuring a lost laptop doesn’t mean compromised data\, taking control of online tracking\, and managing and sharing all those passwords. This is a privacy and security toolkit no researcher should be without! Attendees should bring a laptop or other internet-connected device.   Instructor: Kris Joseph \n\n\n\nParticipants in this workshop may also be interested in the “Safeguarding Yourself: Online Harassment in Academia” session on March 6.

SUMMARY:Safeguarding yourself online
DESCRIPTION:Date: 6 March 2024 \n\n\n\nAs graduate students or faculty members\, we are often asked to make our research visible\, have an active online profile\, and engage with other academics in social media circles. However\, the push for engaged\, online public scholarship is sometimes at odds with what we know of online behaviour: the subject of your research may make you a target for online harassment\, doxxing\, and other forms of abuse. This workshop provides a sobering glimpse into the nature of research harassment and provides an empowering approach to managing your risk and online safety through the use of threat modelling and strategic action. Instructor: Kris Joseph. \n\n\n\nParticipants in this workshop may also be interested in the “Safeguarding your Research Data: Privacy and Security Tools” session on February 28.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Machine Learning: Regression Models
DESCRIPTION:This workshop offers an exploration of machine learning models for clustering and classification. With the increasing availability of large datasets\, these models play a crucial role in extracting valuable insights and making informed decisions. In this workshop\, participants will gain insight into clustering algorithms such as K-means\, explore popular classification algorithms like decision trees\, and learn about anomaly detection. Through a combination of lectures and hands-on exercises\, participants will learn how to preprocess data\, select relevant features\, and evaluate model performance. By the conclusion of the workshop\, participants will have a solid foundation in building and deploying machine learning models for clustering and classification tasks. \n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, we will use cloud-based platforms\, so you don’t need to have Python installed. Please make sure that you have a Google Colaboratory (https://colab.research.google.com/) account. This workshop will involve hands-on exercises that require the use of programming tools and libraries commonly used in machine learning\, such as Python and Scikit-learn. As such\, prior familiarity with Python programming is recommended for participants to fully benefit from the practical component of the workshop. \n\n\n\nSign up for other Machine Learning workshops in this series: \n\n\n\n\nIntroduction to Machine Learning: Neural Networks\n\n\n\n\nOr view other upcoming Digital Scholarship workshops. If participants attend all of “Special Topics in Digital Scholarship” series\, it counts as six hours towards the cc:DH/HN certificate. \n\n\n\nDate: Tuesday\, March 19\, 2024\, 1:00pm – 3:00pm Pacific Time \n\n\n\nPresenter: Vedant Bahel
