SUMMARY:How Ideas Travel: Introduction to Research Impact
DESCRIPTION:This virtual session introduces attendees to the world of Research Impact. Research impact counts the number of times a publication has been cited by other researchers or mentioned in media. Understanding the field can help you identify “hot topics” of emerging research\, gain a more thorough grasp of your research community\, benchmark your career progress\, communicate your knowledge more effectively\, and more. Learn to leverage key databases to identify the expertise of researchers\, institutions\, and journals at this introductory workshop!

SUMMARY:RDM Community of Practice - Data Management Plan (DMP) Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:McMaster’s Research Data Management (RDM) Community of Practice is back! We meet the last Thursday of every month to learn together as researchers and research support staff across all levels of RDM expertise. Data Management Plans (DMPs) are growing as a requirement for grants\, from the Tri-Agencies\, to NIH\, and others. They can also be a helpful document to guide best practices—either as a process document for your research group or as an individual researcher. Join our RDM Community of Practice to discuss DMP development!

SUMMARY:Protect Your Research Data: Introduction to Information Security for Researchers
DESCRIPTION:Universities are not immune from data breaches and cyber attacks. Learn to protect your research data at this webinar with McMaster experts in IT Security and Cybersecurity. After introducing Information Security (a field dedicated to protecting sensitive digital information and data from unauthorized access\, alteration\, and/or destruction)\, the session will examine InfoSec problems specific to researchers. This webinar will also include a case study: If we take a hypothetical research workplace (such as a lab or office)\, what are its potential Information Security weak spots and how might we fix them?

SUMMARY:Data Management Plans + Introduction to DMP Assistant
DESCRIPTION:Planning ahead for research helps you prepare for data questions and problems before they happen. Submitting a Data Management Plan (DMP) is increasingly a requirement for funding applications with Tri-Agencies and the NIH. But DMPs can also be very helpful “living documents”: research tools that identify strengths and gaps which are updated through your research process. In this session\, we’ll start with best practices of data management planning and go through a demo of DMP Assistant\, a web-based tool for developing and collaborating on Data Management Plans in the Canadian research context. We’ll end with a sandbox session.

SUMMARY:‘Ghosts in the Machine: Large Language Models Are Mostly Full of Crap But Still Surprisingly Useful If You Dare’
DESCRIPTION:Alternative title: ‘There is No Artificial Intelligence\, Only Zuul; or\, now that this thing is here\, what can/should we do with it?’ We are so pleased to host again our colleague from Carleton University: Dr. Shawn Graham! Dr. Graham been playing with models of language since the days of Markov chains and Recurrent Neural Networks. In this talk\, he’ll explain poorly how they work\, why they work\, and why you might want to just think of them as ‘calculators for words’. Alternatively\, we can think of them as ghostly echoes of our web culture back to itself. In which case\, he’ll walk us through some of the ways he’s found listening to these echoes to be useful in his research\, in his teaching\, but will also share some of the dead ends too. This isn’t a boosterism talk but rather an attempt to dispel hype. He didn’t write this abstract with the help of an LLM. Location: Univeristy of Ottawa CreatorSpace (Pérez Hall\, room 302).

SUMMARY:Coding for the Humanities
DESCRIPTION:This series of workshops introduces humanities scholars to coding in the humanities. The suite of workshops covers the following topics: \n\n\n\n\nCreating a static page for cuPortfolio (learning to use the command line and GitHub)\n\n\n\nPython I: Basic coding for text analysis\n\n\n\nPython II: CSV files for literature reviews\n\n\n\nPython III: Error searching\, web scraping\, and the ethics of open data\n\n\n\n\nEach of these workshops introduces a core topic for those interested in computational methods for the humanities and provides opportunities to apply the ideas and techniques discussed. Attending all sessions is essential as the workshops are scaffolded to ensure that participants can progress from simpler strategies to more sophisticated approaches. For example: \n\n\n\n\nwork with a command line to create a static web page; and\n\n\n\nexport a CSV from the Library search engine Omni for a literature review.\n\n\n\n\nParticipants must attend an initial “office hours” session to ensure that their device meets the technical requirements of the workshops—no time will be available during the workshops for major technical set-up. \n\n\n\nAll students and faculty are welcome. \n\n\n\nLearning outcomes \n\n\n\n\nSetup Windows or Mac system to meet workshop technical requirements.\n\n\n\nWrite some basic commands to access files from their desktop/laptop directory.\n\n\n\nIdentify the benefits of using Python for certain humanistic research problems.\n\n\n\nImport a CSV from Omni (Library discovery tool) into Python and then use pandas and NLTK to analyze the data in the CSV file.\n\n\n\nDefine a legal and ethical process for accessing digital data.\n\n\n\n\nThe workshops will run on the following dates and times. These sessions are in person only\, with the exception of the technical set up session. \n\n\n\n\nRoom ML252A\n\nTuesday\, November 7     1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Required technical set-up)\n\n\n\nTuesday\, November 14   1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.\n\n\n\nTuesday\, November 21   1:00 p.m. tp 4:00 p.m.\n\n\n\nTuesday\, November 28   1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.\n\n\n\nTuesday\, December 5     9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.\n\n\n\nTuesday\, December 12   1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.\n\n\n\nThursday\, December 14  1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop leader(s): \n\n\n\nMartha Attridge Bufton\, Interdisciplinary Studies Librarian \n\n\n\nChantal Brousseau\, MA candidate (History) \n\n\n\nAlparsian Ozturk\, Business and Government Document Technician \n\n\n\nJennifer Whitney\, Digital Initiatives Librarian \n\n\n\nPlease note: sessions taking place in December do not count toward paid pedagogical training hours. \n\n\n\nCompetencies: \n\n\n\nResearch & Analysis; Digital Literacy; Discipline-specific knowledge

SUMMARY:Introducing the "Canadian BIPOC Artists Rolodex"
DESCRIPTION:Started by professors Jinny Yu and Celina Jeffery (from uOttawa) and Ming Tiampo (from Carleton U)\, the project is a searchable database of Canadian BIPOC artists aimed to facilitate and encourage research\, teaching\, and exhibitions on BIPOC artists\, who as you might know\, continue to be underrepresented in publications\, exhibitions\, and curricula. Research assistants Tia Carey and Candide Mawoko will introduce the database\, which has been named the Canadian BIPOC Artists Rolodex\, references the ways in which BIPOC artists have been historically known through personal and artistic networks rather than through institutions. It seeks to increase accessibility to BIPOC artists during first-phase research and subsequently increase their representation in curriculum\, publications\, and art institutions. It is conceived of in equal measures as a curated platform\, digital humanities project\, and advocacy work. Location: Univeristy of Ottawa CreatorSpace (Pérez Hall\, room 302).
