SUMMARY:Create a Data Management Plan (DMP) for your research project
DESCRIPTION:Date: 4 March 2024 \n\n\n\nA data management plan (DMP) is a document that outlines the organization\, storage\, and sharing of your research data. A DMP addresses phases of the data management lifecycle\,  and supports the management of research data for your project. As DMPs are increasingly required for a variety of funding programs\, this workshop introduces the steps to create a DMP using the Canadian DMP Assistant tool for best practices in data management across all disciplines. Instructors: Lily Ren\, Ricardo Laskaris\, Stephanie Quail  \n\n\n\nThis workshop will cover:  \n\n\n\n• Best practices around data management  \n\n\n\n• Considerations for data management planning  \n\n\n\n• Using the DMP Assistant tool to draft a DMP

SUMMARY:It’s not 2007 anymore: Using Wikipedia to extend student engagement and your research impact
DESCRIPTION:Date: 5 March 2024 \n\n\n\nWikipedia is now the largest global open education resource and is widely used by students\, instructors\, and researchers.   \n\n\n\nEditing Wikipedia is easier than you might think\, and can have uses and benefits beyond just the satisfaction of improving the world’s biggest encyclopedia. Instructors include Wikipedia assignments in the classroom as a method of experiential education and researchers use it to mobilize knowledge and drive research impact.  Instructors: Alexandra Wong\, John Dupuis\, William Denton. \n\n\n\nJoin the Libraries for a discussion to share how you could use Wikipedia\, do use it\, or would like to.

SUMMARY:Safeguarding yourself online
DESCRIPTION:Date: 6 March 2024 \n\n\n\nAs graduate students or faculty members\, we are often asked to make our research visible\, have an active online profile\, and engage with other academics in social media circles. However\, the push for engaged\, online public scholarship is sometimes at odds with what we know of online behaviour: the subject of your research may make you a target for online harassment\, doxxing\, and other forms of abuse. This workshop provides a sobering glimpse into the nature of research harassment and provides an empowering approach to managing your risk and online safety through the use of threat modelling and strategic action. Instructor: Kris Joseph. \n\n\n\nParticipants in this workshop may also be interested in the “Safeguarding your Research Data: Privacy and Security Tools” session on February 28.

SUMMARY:Publishing Your Research Data in a Data Repository
DESCRIPTION:18 March 2024 \n\n\n\nData is deposited into a repository towards the end of its lifecycle when it is ready for sharing and publication. Publishing your data in a trusted data repository can provide the necessary curation and storage conditions to key your data secure and ensure your data is discoverable to a wide audience. Increasingly\, many journal publishers and funding programs encourage the sharing and depositing of research data in a recognized data repository.  \n\n\n\nBy the end of this workshop\, you’ll be able to:  \n\n\n\n• Understand the guiding principles of data sharing and publishing  \n\n\n\n• Learn how to prepare your data for sharing and long-term preservation and access  \n\n\n\n• Access and select trusted data repositories including York’s generalist data repository York U Dataverse  \n\n\n\nIt is recommended that registrants attend the RDM workshop “Create a Data Management Plan (DMP) for Your Research Project” prior.  \n\n\n\nInstructors: Lily Ren\, Ricardo Laskaris\, Stephanie Quail

SUMMARY:Introduction to Machine Learning: Regression Models
DESCRIPTION:This workshop offers an exploration of machine learning models for clustering and classification. With the increasing availability of large datasets\, these models play a crucial role in extracting valuable insights and making informed decisions. In this workshop\, participants will gain insight into clustering algorithms such as K-means\, explore popular classification algorithms like decision trees\, and learn about anomaly detection. Through a combination of lectures and hands-on exercises\, participants will learn how to preprocess data\, select relevant features\, and evaluate model performance. By the conclusion of the workshop\, participants will have a solid foundation in building and deploying machine learning models for clustering and classification tasks. \n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, we will use cloud-based platforms\, so you don’t need to have Python installed. Please make sure that you have a Google Colaboratory (https://colab.research.google.com/) account. This workshop will involve hands-on exercises that require the use of programming tools and libraries commonly used in machine learning\, such as Python and Scikit-learn. As such\, prior familiarity with Python programming is recommended for participants to fully benefit from the practical component of the workshop. \n\n\n\nSign up for other Machine Learning workshops in this series: \n\n\n\n\nIntroduction to Machine Learning: Neural Networks\n\n\n\n\nOr view other upcoming Digital Scholarship workshops. If participants attend all of “Special Topics in Digital Scholarship” series\, it counts as six hours towards the cc:DH/HN certificate. \n\n\n\nDate: Tuesday\, March 19\, 2024\, 1:00pm – 3:00pm Pacific Time \n\n\n\nPresenter: Vedant Bahel

SUMMARY:Introduction to Git and GitHub
DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics of using Git and GitHub for version control and collaboration.  Git is widely used version control software that tracks changes to a group of files\, referred to as a repository.  GitHub is a popular website for hosting and sharing Git repositories\, making it easier to collaborate and share your work.  Together\, Git and GitHub provide a platform that is increasingly used for collaboration in research and academic environments.  In this beginner workshop participants will learn key concepts\, create their own Git repository\, and publish to GitHub.  No previous experience with Git is required.  Familiarity with the command line interface will be helpful but is not necessary. \n\n\n\nPre-workshop setup \n\n\n\nPlease complete the pre-workshop setup to install the Bash shell and Git. If you don’t already have one\, create a free GitHub account before the workshop.  \n\n\n\nThis workshop is part of the Core Skills series.  \n\n\n\nDate: Wednesday March 20\, 2024 10am-noon Pacific \n\n\n\nPresenter: Billie Hu

SUMMARY:Introduction to Machine Learning: Classification and Clustering
\n\n\n\nDate: Tuesday\, March 26\, 2024\, 1:00pm – 3:00pm Pacific Time \n\n\n\nPresenter: Vedant Bahel
