Stylo: a semantic text editor | Stylo, un éditeur de texte sémantique

We’ll be presenting the main features of Stylo, a web-accessible semantic text editor for writing in the humanities and social sciences. Since the project’s launch in 2017, one of its objectives has been to provide a tool capable of changing and improving the academic publishing chain, particularly the workflow of journals in the humanities and social sciences.

Stylo is based on a principle known as single source publishing: from a single source Stylo can produce different objects in various formats such as HTML, PDF, XML. The implementation of this principle relies first and foremost on a WYSIWYM (What you see is what you mean) interface and the use of three formats to manipulate the source: Markdown for body text, YAML to serialize metadata and BibTeX to structure bibliographic references.

In this workshop, we’ll show how to create and write text in Stylo, as well as the various functions for manipulating the elements that will form the source of our documents, which we can then export in a variety of formats.

À l’occasion de cet atelier pour les HSS Winter Series, nous présenterons les principales fonctionnalités de l’outil Stylo, un éditeur de texte sémantique accessible sur le Web et destiné à l’écriture en sciences humaines et en lettres, afin d’en assurer la prise en main.

Depuis les débuts du projet en 2017, l’un des objectifs poursuivis est de fournir un outil capable de changer et d’améliorer la chaîne de publication académique, notamment le flux de travail des revues en SHS.

Stylo repose sur un principe nommé single source publishing : à partir d’une seule source, Stylo peut produire différents objets en divers formats tels que HTML, PDF, XML.

L’implémentation de ce principe passe d’abord par une interface WYSIWYM (What you see is what you mean) et l’emploi de trois formats pour manipuler la source : le Markdown pour le corps de texte, le YAML pour sérialiser les métadonnées et le BibTeX pour structurer les références bibliographiques.

Lors de cet atelier, nous verrons ensemble comment créer et rédiger un texte dans Stylo ainsi que les différentes fonctionnalités pour manipuler les éléments qui constitueront la source de nos documents que nous pourrons ensuite exporter en divers formats.
