Setting Up a Research Project with Data from Humans and Preparing for Ethics 

Are you applying for research ethics? Are you unsure what your responsibilities are for managing it or trying to figure out what a good way to manage it is?

In this workshop, we will discuss the foundations of working with data from human participants. In our modern research environment it is essential to properly protect your data, your research participants, and yourself. We’ll talk about how and when to de-identify sensitive data, and how to share sensitive data.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

1. Understand ethics principles and how they affect research design and practice
2. Select a data storage system
3. Prepare a data linkage key
4. De-identify or anonymize their data
5. Find and assess online research software tools for surveys, interviews, transcription, data collection, and data storage.
6. Prepare data for long-term retention
7. Understand the necessary conditions for deposit and/or sharing of human participant data
