Whether you’re working on a development or analysis project, version control allows you to keep track of your work while facilitating coordination with your colleagues. This workshop will introduce you to the basics of source code control with Git, the version control software recommended by our team.

Registration

  • Academic participant : 10$
  • Non-academic participant : $200

Prerequisites

  • Knowing the keyboard combinations for these characters: [ ] ( ) { } ! $ | * # @ & / < > ~ ‘ “
  • Understanding the notions of file and directory.
  • UNX101 completion or knowledge of the basics of the Unix command line.

  • Introduction to version control;
  • Git configuration;
  • Repository creation;
  • Version tracking;
  • Exploring version history;
  • Ignoring certain files;
  • Remote repositories;
  • Working with others;
  • Conflict management.

Charles Coulombe, analyst in advanced research computing at Calcul Québec.

Technical prerequisites

We will use the Zoom platform. Because this event is a practical workshop, it is very useful having a secondary screen where you would get the instructor window on one screen and your own window on your main screen.

We will use the Jupyter Lab interface. Make sure you have a modern Web browser like Google Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari.
